What Does No Poo Hair Feel Like?

There are so many guides to No Poo hair care, but what does No Poo hair feel like? Does the hair feel the same as when you use commercial shampoos to wash your hair? Or will No Poo hair feel different, somehow?

After looking into so many No Poo methods I wanted to know whether my hair would feel any different from normal if I stopped using traditional methods and embraced the No Poo ideals. So I decided to give this hair movement a go! Keep reading to discover my findings.

For some people, No Poo hair feels the same as traditionally shampooed hair. However, depending upon hair type some people find that the No Poo method makes their hair feels super glossy and full of volume. Finding the right No Poo method that suits your hair type can boost your hairs volume and health.

There are so many ways to No Poo that finding the one that works for you can be a little bit like trial and error.

No Poo hair can feel better than when traditional shampoos are used as the No Poo recipes do not smother the hair and scalp with manufactured chemicals. This allows your hair to naturally replenish its oil and keep your hair moisturized and beautiful.

What Does No Poo Hair Feel Like?

No Poo is a method to keep hair clean without using traditional shampoos which contain chemicals that are harmful to both our bodies and to the environment.

When transitioning to No Poo it is quite normal to find that your hair becomes greasy and less manageable for a short while whilst your hair and scalp remove the damage caused by traditional shampoos. The greasy feel isn’t nice, but you will get past this!

When the silicones in traditional shampoo that normally coat your hair are removed you may be worried to see how damaged your hair actually is.

Previously smooth hair strands may now feel rough and damaged, initially.

Don’t panic though as you now have a unique opportunity to find the perfect No Poo method to fix any damaged hair that the silicones previously covered up.

The No Poo method can help, and once you have found the right recipe combination for your hair you’ll benefit from wonderfully clean and easy to manage hair.

What Is The No Poo Method?

The No Poo method rejects traditional shampoos in favor of using natural products both to benefit our hair and bodies and to help the environment.

Is No Poo Bad For Your Hair?

Just like traditional shampoos, some recipes from No Poo work better for some hair types than others. This is because every individual’s hair is different.

No Poo itself, when the right method is found, is very often given the credit for making hair less frizzy and less fly away. This is owing to allowing the scalp to balance its production of sebum which moisturizes the hair naturally.

There are some potential downsides to using No Poo, but these are usually temporary or easily put right:

  • Greasy: This is often experienced during the transition period as the scalp works out how much sebum it needs to make for your hair to be well nourished and healthy
  • Dandruff: This is often not dandruff but residue from previous shampoos left on the hair, or excess baking soda that has not been thoroughly rinsed out
  • Hair loss: It is not uncommon for people to think that the No Poo method is making them loose hair in the beginning. The real reason that hair appears to be shedding more is that hair growth has been stimulated by removing the chemicals in traditional shampoos are therefore the old, pre-No Poo hair is being shed
  • Smell: Changing from traditional shampoos to a No Poo approach can leave hair having a slight odor to it in the short-term. This is only temporary and should reduce over time

Is No Poo Good For Your Hair?

Removing chemicals from your hair and body can only be a good thing in the long term.

Using a No Poo approach to keeping your hair clean will not only improve the health of your hair but that of your whole being.

The question ‘Is no shampoo better for your hair?’ is often asked by those who want to leave traditional shampoos behind, but need some concrete reasons to do so.

Here are some great reasons to quit traditional shampoo right away:

1. Fewer Chemical

No Poo is a chemical-free way of cleaning your hair to leave it voluminous and beautiful-looking, much healthier for your skin and body.

2. Less Frizz

When using a No Poo approach many people say that their hair is less frizzy.

This is because more porous hair welcomes the naturally produced sebum from your scalp and is thoroughly moisturized so that water in the air is not sucked up and hair does not frizz so easily

3. Cost

Traditional shampoos are expensive, whilst the No Poo method uses inexpensive ingredients often available in every home

4. Time

Following the No Poo method often means that hair washing is reduced to a couple of times a week, if not less.

This frees up your time to do far more interesting things than hair washing

5. Environment

Using the No Poo method stops dangerous chemicals from escaping down the plughole, and fewer plastic bottles end up in landfills (source 1).

How Long Does It Take For Hair To Adjust To No Shampoo?

The time it takes for your hair to adjust from traditional shampoos to a No Poo approach is a totally individual journey.

Some people experience the greasy unpleasant stage for only a couple of weeks, whilst some don’t find their No Poo nirvana for almost 6 months!

However long it takes though, it’s worth the time and effort.

Your hair, your body, and the environment will thank you in the long run, and your hair will look naturally healthy with a shine and volume that may have been missing before.

No Poo Method For Fine Hair

There are so many different ways to wash your hair without using shampoo.

Those of you with fine hair can take comfort in the fact that there is a method out there for you too!

It’s important to remember that it is not only whether your hair is fine. Instead, it is also about the porosity of your hair, and the environment in which you live that will affect which No Poo method will work for you.

Did you know that fine hair using No Poo often appears greasier quicker as the sebum travels the hair follicle quicker? This can be a pain because when your hair is greasy your first urge is likely to wash it, thereby encouraging the scalp to produce more sebum.

If you have been struggling to find the right No Poo method for your fine hair, why not give some of these wash methods and practical tips a go:

1. Baking Soda And Vinegar

This method will effectively strip out the oil, but is harsh on the hair and should not be used too often.

Try using distilled vinegar instead, and only using the baking soda on the middle to ends of your hair

2. Water

This method can work for those with fine hair as there are no sulfates and silicons weighing the hair down.

As there are no chemicals your hair may find its natural balance of sebum more quickly

3. Honey

Organic honey bought locally has many benefits.

Not only is it good for the local economy and the environment, honey deeply nourishes your hair whilst the natural bacteria works on your hair to neutralize any harmful bacteria and act as an antioxidant.

4. Aloe Vera

This antibacterial natural product will cleanse and moisturize your hair and scalp, and just like honey, it smells amazing too!

5. Egg Yolk Hair Wash

Egg has long been used to cleanse and moisturize hair.

For fine hair, the egg can add volume and reduce breakage.

However, you MUST use cold water to rinse out, as warm water may lead to cooked egg in your hair!

6. Rhassoul

Rhassoul is a clay that can be combined with water to cleanse hair and close pores.

Putting clay into fine hair may sound like an odd thing to do, but this type of clay washes out easily and doesn’t weigh the hair down.

7. Talc And Braids

Although not methods in themselves, talc and braiding can be used to reduce and disguise greasy fine hair.

This allows you to leave longer between washing and ultimately will reduce the scalps sebum production to suitable levels

8. Boar Bristle Brush (BBB)

The boar bristle brush (BBB) is a godsend for No Poo’ers as it helps the oil travel all the way down the hair shaft.

Washing your BBB after every use is important though so that you don’t put back oil and dirt the net time you brush

9. Touching

A very simple thing to suggest, yet a very difficult thing to do, but don’t touch your hair!

The oil from your hands will transfer to your hair, weighing it down and making it look greasy

No Poo Hair Loss

There are many reasons for hair loss, including:

  • Age
  • Environment
  • Hormones

Some No Poo methods such as Baking Soda & AVC can cause hair loss through breakage if used too often.

Mostly though, No Poo does not cause hair loss, in fact, many people confirm that their hair grows better when chemicals have been removed.
